Hydropower plays an important role in meeting the world’s growing electricity needs. It is a source of power in around 160 countries worldwide. Since the 1990s, hydropower growth has been driven by concerns regarding climate change, energy security and the volatility of fossil fuel prices. Today, hydropower accounts for more than 19% of the world’s electricity capacity representing over 15% of Global electricity supply.
China, the United States, Brazil, Canada & Russia are the leading countries for hydro power installed capacity. Growth in the industry has been relatively steady in recent years, fuelled mainly by China`s expansion.
